Unfortunately for a young archeological student bent on following his (native) sweetheart's ancient map, he gets a little too close. A serious student who wants really to understand the material is going to feel childish reading about the VecMobile, and a less serious student isn't going to bother reading it because it doesn't have a tight connection with the actual problems.
For a textbook for first year students for such a widely taken course as linear algebra, it is hardly excusable to have a single mistake in the solutions, let alone the examples in the book, because students assume they are wrong and are not experienced enough to realize that the book has made a mistake; the author should have cared enough about writing a good book to ask for less royalties and more money to hire undergraduate and graduate students to read the book and actually do the exercises and examples line by line.
